A written retrospective is being assembled as a memorial to John. We are soliciting content such as photos and reminiscences from those who knew John in one or more of his many roles. We welcome any support you might lend to this effort, and will be happy to receive anything that you feel may be a candidate for this collection.

John Powles was the linchpin of Canada-Japan relations.
His vast knowledge and experience contributed greatly to the enhancement of better understanding and lasting friendships between Canada and Japan.
Having known John since he was a young man, I much admired his dedication toward acting as a bridge between different cultures, and most importantly, succeeding at it.
My most recent experience with John was when I recommended that Premier Gordon Campbell name him to be the Japan Chair of the Premier’s Asia Pacific Trade Council, whose mandate was to enhance British Columbia’s presence in the Asia Pacific. John organized an excellent group which, after many intensive discussions under John’s leadership, compiled a list of six succinct and helpful recommendations.
John can be proud that the Government of British Columbia is now in the process of implementing these recommendations.
Without John’s presence, there will be a deep vacuum and his wisdom and foresight will be sorely missed.
