March 14, 2011 - Telus and Shaw announced Monday that they are offering free long-distance calls to Japan. Telus also said that would include free texting. The free texts apply to Telus customers, whether or not they have a texting plan. Both companies will also offer free access to Japan TV.
Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada advises against non-essential travel to Tokyo and surrounding areas, as well as the prefectures of Chiba, Miyagi, Ibaraki, Iwate, Aomori and Fukushima (see regional warning below), due to damages caused by the March 11 earthquake and subsequent tsunamis.
